1. Find and turn off the stop tap
Usually under the kitchen sink or where the main enters the property. Turn it clockwise. Do this now, before you need it, and make sure everyone in the house knows where it is.
2. Drain the system
Open all cold taps and flush the toilets to empty the pipework and reduce the pressure behind the leak.
3. Turn off the heating
Switch the boiler off at the controls. If water is anywhere near electrics, isolate the affected circuit at the consumer unit.
4. Contain what you can
Buckets, towels, and move anything valuable clear. Photograph the damage — insurers will ask.
5. Call a Gas Safe registered engineer
For gas leaks, do not use switches or naked flames. Open windows, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first.
